The Inverters

To make the most of your solar panels, purchase a hybrid inverter so later you can combine it with a battery energy storage system. A hybrid inverter connects your solar panels to your battery energy storage system.

There are a variety of inverters to choose from for the new low voltage and high voltage battery storage products from LG Chem. These include the SMA AC couple High Voltage, GoodweES-series, Fronius Symo Hybrid, Delta Solarcity Exclusive, Redback SH4600, Ingeteam Ingecon Sunstorage, Victron Energy, SolarEdge SE, HD Wave, Selectronic SP PRO and ABB Inverter.

 


Inverters

String Inverter (Grid Tie and Hybrid), Micro Inverter, Dc Optimizer.

Solar panels will only give the output of your lowest producing panel on the roof. 

The only way to combat this (for instance shaded panels) or (old panel next to new) is to install a micro inverters or DC optimizer into your design to isolate the effected panels.

I have an existing solar system and want to add to it.

The solar has been on the roof for 5 years possibly longer but the new solar is different.

What happens next?

The new solar panels will produce greater power per panel than the old panels on the roof.

Depending on how many panels you want to add will determine want you do. What makes economic sense?

If adding 1 kW of panels don’t panic, with a DC -Optimizers (inverters) which sit under the panel, this will sort the problems for you. At $60-$70 for each panel you can see where this is heading? It’s going to add about $250.00 to the build.

Or, ignore the potential power discrepancy (new panels only offering the same output as the existing panels sitting with the existing system) and live with that.

String Inverter

String inverter are clearly the most popular choice of inverter. The inverter is located on the wall of the home and controls all the power coming from the solar panels on the roof. This is what is typically seen with a conventional solar system. Both grid tie and hybrid string inverters are more efficient than a micro inverter design and the least costly for installation and set up.

Micro Inverter

Solar systems will only produce power output levels of the lowest producing panel in your system. So if one panel is only producing half what it should, then all panels will only deliver half the power from the system. Micro Inverters are used for specific tasks, for instance where solar panels are effected by shade where a solar panel is affected by different sun penetration across the installation. This also occurs when a solar installation covers a roof where panels are laid at different angles to the sun. The power is controlled on the roof. Micro inverters are small inverters which sit under each individual panel.

DC Optimizers

DC optimisers work in conjunction with the string inverter to tackle shade and differing sun penetration issues at the point of the problem and sort it out and thereby allowing the string inverter to act as if the solar were not affected. Also DC optimizers are more in sync with battery ready (hybrid) solutions.

 

All in one battery inverter combination

All in One battery and inverter systems are in there infancy. Combination battery inverter units are generally bulky and heavy, require fans for cooling and are not compatable with existing battery systems. Sunny Boy Storage is compatable with the LG Chem RESU high Voltage Batteries. Much of the SBS2.5 stock in Australia was manufactured prior to the completion of the compatabitity. These units will need a firmware upgrade during installation and commissioning before it will work correctly with the High Voltage range.

The upgrade process can be done using and Andrroid smartphone while commissioning.
